Clownfish is a brand and communications consultancy focused on sustainability. Clownfish combines business strategy, environmental science and marketing to design and deliver comprehensive customised solutions for each client. The company was founded in 2002 by Diana Nieto Verde.
As an organisation, Clownfish strives to achieve environmental sustainability throughout all of their work. Beyond that, Clownfish has taken all the necessary tactical measures to ensure that they have the least impact environmentally and the maximum impact socially.
Early in her career Verde Nieto found that there was limited interest in and discussion of sustainably and all things green—it wasn’t fashionable. There was a clear gap in the market and a need for a consultancy aimed at helping businesses to become agents of change in society. This in conjunction with Verde Nieto’s Argentinean background and personal interest in social issues all culminated in the development of Clownfish.
The overall mission statement is to be an agent of change, guiding businesses in their social and environmental practices.
Clownfish aims to act as a facilitator for businesses and government/public sector bodies that are interested in having positive impacts on society and the environment.
Clownfish aims to give unique guidance and advice to their clients, always looking at both the footprint and “brain-print” of an organisation. On every project Clownfish assess both the physical impact their client is having on the environment and on society and then consider the change of mindset needed to reduce that impact?
Clownfish are strong advocators of transparent marketing, ensuring that all claims made publicly can be verified by clear and comprehensible proof points.
When Clownfish was first developed, it was a one-man operation being run solely by Verde Nieto. Since then, the company has expanded with offices in London, New York and Shanghai. This rapid growth has been sparked by a substantial expansion of the Clownfish client base.
Clownfish produces strategies to be used and implemented by their clients, but the extent to which companies pursue these suggestions cannot always be measured or controlled. Verde Nieto believes that their work isn’t complete until sustainability stops being a trend and becomes part of the engrained process of businesses.
